George Washington |

George Washington is regarded as the most famous Freemason in United States history. All Masons feel a proud connection to him, especially here at Washington Lodge in Lexington, Massachusetts. Washington was initiated as a Mason in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1752. He became a Master Mason a year later. Washington had distinguished himself as a British military officer prior to the War of Independence. He was so highly respected and admired that he was selected to lead the newly formed Continental Army. History has recorded his heroism, patriotism, and visionary leadership during the War. He was inaugurated in New York City, NY on April 30, 1789 at the age of 57. His event took place in Federal Hall on Wall Street. Since this was a new ceremony, Washington requested a Bible on which to take the oath of office. However, no one had thought to bring one for the occasion. Consequently, they borrowed one from the nearby St. John’s Lodge #1. Washington took the oath of office on the open Bible and then kissed it. The page was immediately bookmarked where his hand rested during the oath and the Lodge has preserved this Bible for over 200 years. Five other Presidents have taken oath on the same Bible over the years. They include: Washington, Warren G. Harding, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and George Herbert Walker Bush. |
